Air-activated warmers are a Japanese winter staple. The pad contains iron powder, salt, water, activated carbon and vermiculite, sealed in an airtight outer bag. Open the bag and oxygen reaches the iron, which starts oxidising and releases heat steadily over several hours. Nothing needs to be plugged in, microwaved or shaken.
The Donto Kaoru range adds a scent to the format. This one is ginger, and because warmth carries fragrance upward on rising moisture, the scent releases gradually as the pad works. Kincho recommends placing it on the stomach, though the lower back, shoulders and the back of the neck all work as well.
These are adhesive pads, and the adhesive is designed to stick to the outside of an inner layer of clothing, never directly to skin. Eight pads per pack covers a week or so of daily use, or a longer stretch if you use them only on the coldest days.
