Overview

A black toothpaste looks alarming the first time you use it, and that novelty is a large part of why Sumigaki became a Japanese drugstore fixture. The paste comes out jet black, foams grey, and rinses away completely without leaving anything behind on the teeth.

The charcoal is doing real work rather than sitting there for effect. Fine charcoal particles carry adsorption pores that pick up food residue and surface debris, and they sit alongside silica as the cleaning system. That is what makes this a bamboo charcoal toothpaste rather than a novelty item with black dye in it.

The flavour is herb mint with menthol, which lands fresher and slightly more herbal than a standard peppermint. As a charcoal toothpaste it is used exactly like any other: pea-sized amount, twice a day, two minutes. Kobayashi makes it in Japan in a 100 g tube.
