Overview

The skin across the buttocks and upper thighs takes a specific kind of punishment. Long hours sitting, friction from waistbands and tight underwear, and clothing that never really lets the area breathe all combine to leave rough patches and bumpy texture that ordinary body wash does not touch. Pelican Hip Care Scrub Soap exists for exactly that, and it has sold in the millions in Japan on word of mouth alone.

The bar works on two fronts. Peach seed powder and konjac mannan provide the physical scrub, fine enough to use on skin that is thinner than you might assume, while malic, lactic and citric acids plus a fermented honey filtrate soften the surface chemically. Alongside those sit six botanical extracts, including peach leaf, peach seed, loquat leaf, kiwi, artichoke leaf and aloe vera sap, so the bar is not purely stripping. As a hip care soap it is meant to be used in circular motions rather than lathered and rinsed like an ordinary bar.

Within the Pelican Canada range, this is the bar people arrive looking for. It is worth being straightforward about scope. This is a cleansing bar that exfoliates. It softens rough texture and it smells strongly of fresh peach. The heart shape is genuinely charming and a large part of why the Pelican Soap range has travelled so far outside Japan, though it does make the bar easier to snap if you drop it on tile.

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

Q1: How often should I use it?

A: Two or three times a week to start. This is an exfoliating bar and the skin in this area does not need daily scrubbing. Increase only if your skin is comfortable with it.

Q2: Can I use it anywhere else on my body?

A: Yes. Elbows, knees, ankles and the backs of the arms can also be exfoliated with the bar. Keep it off the face and away from intimate areas.

Q3: Is it harsh?

A: The scrub particles are fine and the acids are at cosmetic levels, but it is still an exfoliating product. Use light pressure and let the bar do the work rather than pressing hard.

Q4: Does the peach scent stay on the skin?

A: Faintly. It is much stronger in the shower than it is afterwards. Most of the scent rinses away.

Q5: Why is it heart-shaped?

A: It is a design choice, and a large part of why the bar became popular. The practical downside is that a shaped bar is easier to snap if you drop it on a hard floor.
