Overview

Adlay has a long history in Japanese and Chinese skincare, where it is usually sold under the name hatomugi. WA SO SEN builds its entire range around coix seed extract, and this cleansing foam is the starting point of that routine: the same ingredient that runs through the line's lotions, milks and peeling gel, in a wash-off format.

The wash foams up into a fine, dense lather rather than a loose one, which is what lets it lift oil and the day's grime out of the pores without needing to be scrubbed. Hyaluronic acid is included alongside the adlay extract so skin does not feel tight and squeaky after rinsing, which is the common complaint with foaming cleansers.

At 150g the tube is a large one by facial cleanser standards and is priced as an everyday staple rather than a treatment product. It suits morning and evening use as the second step after an oil or balm cleanser, or on its own if you are not wearing makeup.

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

Q1: What is adlay?

Adlay is a grain, sold in Japanese skincare as hatomugi and known elsewhere as coix seed or Job's tears. It has a long history in Japanese and Chinese skincare and is the single ingredient the whole WA SO SEN range is built around.

Q2: Is this the same as Naturie Hatomugi?

No. Naturie is a separate brand from Imju. Both ranges are built around the same botanical, adlay or hatomugi, and the packaging styles look similar, but the formulas and the companies behind them are different.

Q3: Can I use it morning and night?

Yes. It is a daily foaming cleanser. At 150g the tube is sized for twice-daily use.

Q4: Do I still need an oil cleanser?

If you wear makeup or sunscreen, use an oil or balm cleanser first and follow with this as the second step. On a bare-faced day it works fine on its own.

Q5: Will it leave my skin feeling tight?

Hyaluronic acid is included specifically to soften that squeaky, tight feeling that foaming cleansers can leave. Follow with a toner and moisturiser as usual.
