Getting a six-year-old to brush properly is mostly a flavour problem. Mint burns, and a child who dislikes the taste will rush the job or skip it. That is the entire reasoning behind a cola-flavoured kids toothpaste: it removes the objection.
This is the ages 6 and over formulation in the Zettoc Kids range, which is the point at which the first permanent teeth are coming through. It contains sodium fluoride and cetylpyridinium chloride, and is sweetened with xylitol rather than sugar. There is no mint, no artificial colouring and the abrasion level is low.
Zettoc has been making toothpaste in Japan since 1954. As a children's toothpaste, it is used the same way as any other: a pea-sized amount, twice a day, with an adult supervising and the child spitting out afterwards. The range also covers a fluoride-free gel for ages 2 to 5, which is the one to choose for a younger child.
